DAMASCUS CHEFS KNIFE - 6-7th JUNE 2026
DAMASCUS STEEL KNIFE COURSE
For hundreds of years the legendary Damascus steel has been forged by blacksmiths from all around the world and in Britain we have always had a strong tradition of steel work and blade making. I would like this tradition to continue - so this course looks at ancient European style chef’s knives combined with the skills of forge welding and laminating , how blades are forged and how handles are fitted.
This course is for 4 people and aims to explore the traditions of Damascus steel, where it came from and how it's made. You will be forging your own chef’s knife from a pre-made 35 layer billet and fitted with a wooden hidden tang handle.
DAY 1 : Safety and introduction to blacksmithing. Forging the billet of Damascus steel (80CRV2/15N20 mix) to make your 8-9" knife blade. You will follow this by shaping the profile and start the heat treating cycles ready for the next stages.
DAY 2 : Learning the art of heat treating steel - annealing, quenching and tempering . You will be shown how to grind the blade bevels to a satin finish and how to etch the blade to reveal the beautiful Damascus pattern . Lastly you will prepare and fit the wooden handle and the finally sharpen to a razor edge.
You will go home with a beautiful personalised chef’s knife that will last generations.
