Each of our axes is hand forged from EN9 Swedish carbon steel and fitted with English or European Ash handles and hardwood wedges.

This hatchet is the perfect belt or pack axe. The head and blade geometry makes these axes extremely efficient for kindling, limbing branches and even felling small trees. 

This axe pattern is inspired by the axes of Edward Elwell Ltd , one of Britain's most iconic edge tool making companies. Easily recognisable by the off-set cheeks and curved heel on the head.

ELWELL HISTORY - Edward Elwell (1783–1869) leased a forge in 1817 in Wood Green, Wednesbury, powered by water from river Tame. Elwell became known as a maker of quality edge tools, such as axes, hoes, shovels and spades. The machinery was powered by water and by steam engines. By 1851 Edward Elwell's son Edward (1814–1857) had taken over management of the company.

The company exported to many countries, including America, where it sold large quantities of edge tools during the American Civil war. The company was interested in the welfare of its workforce, converting former workshops into housing, and developing sports facilities

After Alfred Elwell's (grandson) death in 1902 the business became a limited company. The water wheels were replaced in 1904 by turbines. In 1967, the company became one of the amalgamated firms of a newly formed company Spearwell Tools Ltd, and this was later taken over by Spear & Jackson – who still make gardening tools to this day. Wednesbury Forge closed in 2005, and the buildings were demolished in 2007.

CARE - IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR AXE.

Keep your axe in a dry place - Make sure that the bit and the bit sheath are not wet when you put on the sheath. Oil the axe head before it is put away for any length of time to prevent rust.

Axe heads are forged for cutting or carving – do not use as a splitting wedge or hammer onto the poll of the axe. This may cause it to deform or splinter.

Axe handles can come loose – check that the head is fitted securely before using and refit if loose. Oil the handle (linseed oil) at least once a year especially before storing away.
