INTRODUCTION TO BLACKSMITHING (1 day course)

Spend a day in a fully equipped working forge learning all the basic blacksmithing techniques. After covering health and safety procedures in the forge you will be shown the tools, equipment and how to light and use the forge.

You will cover many of the traditional skills used by blacksmiths, as well as work steel at different temperatures and learn how to judge the heat of the metal by its colour.

This is an extremely enjoyable but physical day working in the forge. We will set projects which will enable you to learn all the basic techniques and at the end of the day you will take home all your forged metalwork.

There are only six places on each course making this an intense and fun day but also allowing you to progress at your own pace.

COST = £150 per person.

KNIFE MAKING FOR BEGINNERS (2 day course)

Over the course of the weekend students will learn how to forge small single piece ‘blacksmiths’  knives and also a variety of blades using different carbon steels.

DAY 1 – Forging high carbon steels (EN9 and EN45) to make foraging and small skinning knives.

DAY 2 – An introduction to forge welding leads on to making a billet of laminate steel (San Mai) from which you can forge larger knives. These , along with your other pieces, will then be hardened and tempered. We do not fit wooden handles on this course.

Further teaching and practice on materials, heat treating and grinding will also be part of the course.

Some previous experience is recommended but not essential for this course.

The course is fully catered (lunch and dinner on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday) by a local cook, providing exceptionally tasty meals from locally sourced produce. There is also free camping in the orchard adjacent to the forge.

Please advise if you have any specific dietary requirements or medical conditions.

COST = £ 285 per person.

AXE MAKING FOR BEGGINNERS (2 day course)

Learn how to forge a single piece hatchet axe over the course of a weekend.

DAY 1 – Forging the axe head.

DAY 2 – Hardening, tempering, grinding and handle fitting.

The goal of this course is that each participant will take home their own hand forged axe. No experience required.

Alex travelled to Sweden in 2014 to learn axe making at Gransfors Bruks , the world renown axe making factory. Here he discovered a love of making these tools and has spent the following years honing his skills and perfecting his style – this is what he would like to teach to others.

The course is fully catered (lunch and dinner on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday) by a local cook, providing exceptionally tasty meals from locally sourced produce. There is also free camping in the orchard adjacent to the forge.
